The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has recently updated the National Frequency Allocation Plan to accommodate the expansion of Next Generation Mobile Services (NGMS) and align local regulations with international standards.
This update significantly impacts manufacturers of both cellular and short-range devices (SRDs) looking to access the Pakistani market.

Key highlights of the recent regulatory shifts include:
  • 5G Commercial Launch: On 19 March 2026, licenses were formally granted to major operators for 5G services. Manufacturers must ensure 5G-enabled hardware is tested against specific local NGMS bands to qualify for the PTA’s official whitelist.
  • RFID Frequency Deviations: Manufacturers should note that Pakistan utilizes the 920–925 MHz range for RFID applications. Equipment tuned exclusively to European harmonized bands may require hardware adjustments for the local market.
  • Strict Type Approval: Mandatory PTA Type Approval remains in effect for all radio communication equipment, requiring rigorous verification of Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), emission masks, and frequency stability.

Understanding these technical shifts is critical for ensuring product compliance and preventing interference with newly licensed primary services. These changes influence R&D timelines and market entry strategies for any manufacturer targeting the region.
