The Department of Telecommunications has issued rules for short-range automotive radar systems operating in the 77-81 GHz band.

These systems are exempt from licensing when installed on vehicles for radiolocation purposes. They may be used, sold, or hired without a separate licence, subject to technical limits.

The rules set limits for power, emission bandwidth, and unwanted emissions. Equipment type approval is required through the DoT portal unless approval for a similar equipment type has already been published.

Systems must follow applicable Indian standards or relevant international standards. If interference occurs, users may be required to reduce power, relocate equipment, or take other corrective measures.
