21-OCT-20

On 13th October, the Malaysian Government announced their plan to phase out 3G network coverage by the end of 2021. As of 1st January 2021, all approvals including renewal approvals will no longer be issued for 3G-only equipment and 4G-capable mobile phones without VoLTE (Voice over LTE). The phasing out of 3G in Malaysia will support the existing 4G network and help to build the foundations of Malaysia’s implementation of 5G.

The change is introduced as part of the implementation of the National Digital Network Plan or JENDELA under the Twelfth Malaysian Plan (2021 – 2025), which aims to enhance digital connectivity and the quality of experience for communications network across the country.

As advised above, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will cease the issuance of new and renewal approvals for 3G-only equipment and 4G-capable mobile phones without VoLTE (Voice over LTE) as of 1st January 2021, including all Certificate of Conformity (CoC) and Certificate of Approval (CoA) applications.

As such, manufacturers of various 3G equipment, such as mobile phones, vehicle trackers, smart meters etc. will need to migrate to 4G in order to continue using their equipment in Malaysia.
