The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has moved to widen unlicensed use of the 6 GHz frequency band following a press announcement dated January 29, 2026. The adopted order updates the framework for unlicensed operations in the band and introduces a new device type known as Geofenced Variable Power (GVP).

GVP devices are designed to enable outdoor operation at increased power levels, while using location-based controls (“geofencing”) to help manage where and how that higher-power use can occur. The FCC’s decision is intended to support expanded connectivity options in the 6 GHz band while maintaining protections for other services that share or are adjacent to the spectrum.
