Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) has published its decision on revisions to the 2500–2690 MHz band plan.
The current mix of paired FDD and unpaired TDD spectrum will eventually be replaced by a fully unpaired TDD configuration. Under the new band plan, the spectrum will be divided into 38 unpaired 5 MHz blocks, which can be combined to support wider bandwidths.
Until formal transition dates are confirmed, both the existing band plan and the new unpaired plan will remain applicable. Equipment operating under the new band plan must operate on a no-interference, no-protection (NINP) basis in relation to systems using the existing band plan.
ISED also plans to update the relevant technical standards, including RSS-199 and SRSP-517, to reflect the revised arrangement.
Existing deployment requirements attached to current licences will be removed. However, licence holders will still be required to demonstrate that the spectrum is being put to use under future conditions and timelines that will be set out in a later consultation.
ISED has also confirmed that the transition will not begin in 2028. Detailed transition arrangements will be subject to further consultation, with transition dates expected to be no earlier than 2033.
