The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced an update to its Covered List, expanding it to include certain foreign-produced unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly known as drones, as well as essential UAS components. This action is part of an ongoing effort to address potential national security risks associated with specific foreign technologies.

Under the revised policy, equipment added to the Covered List going forward will no longer be eligible for FCC authorization. As a result, newly listed devices cannot be imported into, marketed, or sold within the United States. However, the FCC has clarified that the update does not retroactively affect drone models or components that were already approved prior to this decision.

According to the FCC, the measure is intended to safeguard U.S. communications infrastructure while providing regulatory certainty for existing products currently in use. Manufacturers, distributors, and operators are encouraged to review the updated Covered List to ensure compliance with the new requirements.
